About NY Albany Tamil Sangam (Not for Profit Organization)
Tamil Sangam is formed to preserve, maintain and perpetuate the heritage of the people of Tamil origin, to and promote literacy, cultural, social, economic, and community affairs of the Tamil speaking people by organizing cultural events for the Tamil community in the Albany area. Also to collaborate, host and assist in the organization of periodic Tamil literary and cultural conferences to foster friendship and understanding between the Tamils and others to support humanitarian causes. Purpose of Tamil School(Run by NYATS)
Our mission is to teach Tamil, an ancient and literature-rich South Asian classical language, to individuals in the Greater Albany area in a safe, caring, and nurturing environment. And this school will be run under Albany Tamil Sangam which is a non-profit organization and open to all those who wish to learn the Tamil Language. The Tamil School is a special purpose school dedicated to teaching Tamil language to children. We have close to 250 Tamil speaking families living around Albany area out of which 140 registered to our Tamil Sangam. We want to provide opportunity for our kids to learn their mother tongue which will help them to communicate with their grandparents and relatives in India. Our School/Classes is fully run by Volunteers. We have close to 30 kids registered for this year school and 12 volunteers registered to help us for this school year.
The primary educational goals of our Tamil School are that students
- Develop fluency and competency in understanding spoken Tamil
- Communicate and express their ideas in Tamil
- Read and comprehend in Tamil
- Write in Tamil

Our Language
Tamil is one of the longest surviving classical languages in the world. 2,200-year-old Tamil-Brahmi inscriptions have been found on Samanamalai. It has been described as "the only language of contemporary India which is recognizably continuous with a classical past.
The variety and quality of classical Tamil literature has led to its being described as "one of the great classical traditions and literatures of the world". Tamil also spelt Tamizh is a Dravidian language spoken predominantly by Tamil people of South India and North-east Sri Lanka. It has official status in the Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Tamil is also an official and national language of Sri Lanka and an official language of Singapore. It is one of the 22 scheduled languages of India and was the first Indian language to be declared a classical language by the Government of India in 2004.
The two earliest manuscripts from India to be acknowledged and registered by UNESCO Memory of the World register in 1997 and 2005 were in Tamil.
Our History
The region of Tamil Nadu in modern India has been under continuous human habitation since prehistoric era from 15,000 BCE to 10,000 BCE. Throughout its history, spanning the early Upper Paleolithic age to modern times, this region has coexisted with various external cultures. .
The three ancient Tamil empires of Chera, Chola, and Pandya were of ancient origins. Together they ruled over this land with a unique culture and language, contributing to the growth of some of the oldest extant literature in the world. They had extensive maritime trade contacts with the Roman empire. These three dynasties were in constant struggle with each other vying for hegemony over the land. Invasion by the Kalabhras during the 3rd century disturbed the traditional order of the land by displacing the three ruling kingdoms. These occupiers were overthrown by the resurgence of the Pandyas and the Pallavas, who restored the traditional kingdoms. The Cholas, who re-emerged from obscurity in the 9th century by defeating the Pallavas and the Pandyas, rose to become a great power and extended their empire over the entire southern peninsula. At its height the Chola empire spanned almost 3,600,000 km² (1,389,968 sq mi) straddling the Bay of Bengal
